Mission Critical Weapon System Software

With its roots firmly in embedded software development, Xpitec has authored the software for numerous embedded systems that are active to this day. One of Xpitec’s defence clients trusts us to develop and maintain the software that runs on the platform to aggregate and transfer data from various sensors and systems to the weapon. The software design patterns, practices, and methods Xpitec deployed ensure the safe, mission-critical performance of software that can be maintained over several years without being rewritten.  

This project speaks to decades of embedded software development expertise and how Xpitec can maintain its capability to support such long-running programmes for extended periods of time. Robust Wireless IoT Product Range

Xpitec supported Xemote, a leader in South African remote monitoring solutions, in transitioning its wired sensing product range to a next-generation wireless IoT system. With an end-to-end solution developed fully in South Africa, Xemote now offers a range of high-reliability, low-power, narrowband RF sensors with an unparalleled level of support and customizability.

Devices developed for this product range required a cost-sensitive design, multi-disciplinary development, and robust, accurate performance to meet the demands of the clients they serve throughout South Africa.

Embedded Software developed for this system incorporates the same design patterns and techniques Xpitec has pioneered over decades of defence and commercial projects that require systems to work in the field without fail.

PCB and Mechanical design worked hand-in-hand to produce a range of modern, compact, fit-for-purpose hardware items optimised for cost without sacrificing years of battery-based performance.

The solution design was concluded with certification of the entire range by ICASA and various SANAS accredited laboratories.

Product Life Cycle Test Equipment

A number of Xpitec’s clients have relied on our expertise in Product Life Cycle integrated Test Equipment systems. One of these cases saw Xpitec pick up a dormant data pack and implement a turn-key Test Equipment system that is used during software development, production acceptance testing, Environmental Stress Screening, and post-sales support. This enabled the client to resume production of this product, develop updated software for it, and test every unit fully off the production line.

This project saw Xpitec develop the fit-for-purpose protocol ACRES, scripting capabilities, and effective test equipment methodologies that are still used today.

The hardware design for this project was concerned with measurement accuracy, multiplexing, and impedance control to manage requirements for local and remote (in-oven) testing throughout the production process.

Subsequent projects have seen Xpitec expand on these capabilities, include National Instruments-based solutions, and further integrate Test Equipment into the development life cycle.

Bespoke PCIe ARCNET Hardware

ARCNET is an enduring networking protocol still used on various defence systems due to its highly reliable, predictable behaviour. Unfortunately, modern-day support for such systems has dwindled, with limited support to enhance and extend products that offer this type of connectivity. To meet this need, Xpitec developed a range of PCI Express-based ARCNET network interface cards.

For one of our clients, these cards were upgraded to allow timestamping and control of the card in the order of the microsecond range when paired with INtime real-time operating system software developed by Xpitec.

This project was one of the first truly high-speed signal designs Xpitec completed. Once the base PCI Express design was done, the flexibility of the FPGA-based solution was leveraged to implement both RS-485 and Hybrid based ARCNET card variants.

The Xilinx FPGA firmware development was all done in-house, which allowed tight control over the performance and timing characteristics of the solution while ensuring future maintainability. This was all integrated with the INtime real-time operating system as part of various telemetry recording and simulator systems for several solutions.
